Obama cuts back his 60th birthday celebration due to COVID-19
Hanna Hankins, a spokeswoman for former US President Barack Obama, said today, Wednesday, that Obama has scaled back plans to celebrate his 60th birthday at the weekend due to the spread of the highly contagious and mutated Delta strain of the emerging coronavirus.
Hankins added that the celebration, which had been scheduled for months, is consistent with public health guidelines and precautionary measures taken to tackle COVID-19.
But she added in a statement that "due to the spread of the new Delta strain over the past week, President Obama and his wife have decided to reduce the celebration to family and close friends only."
Obama turned 60 today and was planning to mark his milestone with hundreds of former administration officials, Democratic donors and celebrities, according to reports.
Obama's spokeswoman did not elaborate on scaling back party plans.
