Roger Federer qualifies for the quarter-finals and enters Wimbledon history through a new door
Roger Federer battled bad weather in the first set to become the oldest player in the professional era to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals with a 7-5 6-4 6-2 victory over Italian 23rd seed Lorenzo Sonego on Monday.
Federer, who turns 40 next month, was tied 5-5 in the first set before the rain fell and the two players returned to the dressing room.
After a 20-minute hiatus to seal the roof of the center court, Sonego returned to commit a double fault under the floodlights to lose his serve.
This gave Federer a chance to impose his word on the rest of the match after he made use of only two of his 9 break points in the first set.
In his 18th appearance in the Wimbledon quarter-finals to extend his record, the eight-times champion will meet Russia's second seed Daniil Medvedev or Poland's Hubert Hurkacz.
