Romania excluded from weightlifting competitions in Tokyo Olympics
The International Weightlifting Federation on Thursday banned the Romanian federation for a year due to numerous doping violations, and has subsequently been excluded from the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Romania became the fourth country to be excluded from the Olympic weightlifting competitions after Egypt, Malaysia and Thailand, due to doping problems as well, and 15 other countries can send only a limited number of athletes to Tokyo due to previous doping violations, including Russia, Iran and Turkey.
According to the decision of the International Weightlifting Federation, Romania's suspension of membership can be lifted 4 months before the end of the sentence, if the Romanian federation pays a fine of $50,000 and neither athlete nor officials violate anti-doping rules again by February 15.
It is reported that Romania can file an appeal against the ban.
