Moretti, Sean Penn, Kirill Serebrennikov and Jacques Audiard compete for the Palme de Cannes Twenty-four films will participate in the official competition of the 74th Cannes Film Festival, which will be held next July, including the films of Italian Nani Moretti, American Sean Penn, Russian Kirill Serebrennikov and French Jacques Audiard, according to the list announced by the organizers at a press conference Thursday.

They were joined by France's Leos Carax (director of the opening film "Annette"), American Wes Anderson ("The French Dispatch") and Dutchman Paul Verhoeven ("Benedetta"), whose names have already been announced.

Among the 24 films competing for the Palme d'Or from July 6 to 17, 4 are directed by women.

A number of out-of-competition films are shown, including "De Son Vivian" by Emmanuel Bercot with Catherine Deneuve, Cecile de France and Benoit Magimel. Filming of this movie was stopped after Catherine Deneuve was admitted to the hospital.

Another much-anticipated movie is "Stillwater," a Tom McCarthy thriller filmed in Marseille with Matt Damon and Cammy Cotten.

It is worth noting that a new section was created this year at the festival entitled “Cannes Premiere” for premieres, in which experienced directors whose films were previously selected for the festival’s competition are participating.

Among the films included in this category are "Trumburey" by Arnaud Deplechane and "Sunday Mothering" by Frenchwoman Eva Osun.

Also new this year is the creation of a temporary department dedicated to environmental issues. In mid-April, the festival announced a series of measures aimed at reducing its environmental footprint.

The official list includes 61 films in total. The names of the jury members, headed by American Spike Lee, were not revealed.

Logistically, festival general delegate Thierry Frémaux called for “prevention” and “caution” given that the Covid-19 pandemic has not yet been “defeated”.
