London Police begin investigations after a series of 9 stabbings in the city
Police in London have opened an investigation into a murder in the south of the capital in a wave of violence that also resulted in the injury of at least nine, and say that a man was killed and at least nine were wounded in a series of "isolated" incidents.
One of two wounded men on a Wisbeach Road estate died at the scene despite efforts by emergency services to rescue him from a stab wound.
The Guardian newspaper said that a group of men went to the property to visit a young man who lives there, noting that the 22-year-old was stabbed with a knife in a quarrel, and his family came to the scene and refused to speak to the media.
Nine men were injured by multiple stab wounds, and initial reports indicated that there were no serious injuries. Two people were arrested.
A man in his forties was taken to hospital to receive treatment and then was arrested on suspicion of a fight. Another man, 38, was arrested on suspicion of inflicting serious harm, and other incidents occurred in separate places in the city.
Police said there was still no evidence to suggest that all of the stabbings were linked and that they were being dealt with as individual incidents.
Three of these incidents occurred 1.5 miles from West Croydon Station, one of the most violent areas in the capital, as a new violence suppression unit was established in the area in an effort to ensure that serious crimes did not return to pre-lockdown levels.
Local MP Steve Reid of the Labor Party tweeted: "Very horrific news that will devastate our community - thoughts with all the injured, and with the police and medical personnel who are dealing with the situation."
