Vice President Mike Pence's chief of staff, Mark Short, said President Donald Trump had banned him from entering the White House after the vice president announced that he would certify the Electoral College results for the 2020 presidential election.

Earlier, President Trump pressured Pence to reject Joe Biden's electoral victory while presiding over the joint session of Congress on Wednesday to endorse the vote, but, as the Daily Caller notes, the vice president has no veto power over the electorate's vote.

Trump said earlier on Wednesday: "Mike Pence, I hope you will defend the interest of our constitution and the good of our country, and if you are not, I will be very disappointed in you," according to Fox News reports.

The president summoned his Vice President Pence again in a tweet that has since been deleted by Twitter as pro-Trump protesters and rioters stormed the Capitol Building, postponing the ratification process as lawmakers were forced to close.

Later on Wednesday, Pence broke with Trump, writing in a letter to Congress, "It is my measured appreciation that my oath of upholding and defending the Constitution prevents me from demanding unilateral authority to determine which electoral votes should count and which should not."

Congress finally confirmed Biden's victory in the Electoral College in the early hours of Thursday.
