John Katko is the first Republican representative to support impeachment of Trump due to congressional events
Republican member of the US House of Representatives, John Katko, confirmed that he would vote in favor of removing President Donald Trump from office, against the backdrop of his supporters storming the Capitol building in Washington last week.
Katko became the first Republican in the House of Representatives to endorse Democrats' calls to impeach outgoing President Donald Trump, ahead of President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration on January 20.
"Allowing the president of the United States to instigate this attack without consequences, is a direct threat to our democracy," the Republican lawmaker said in a statement, referring to Trump's supporters storming the Congress building last week.
"I cannot sit down without taking any reaction ... I will vote to remove this president," Katko added.
On Wednesday, the US House of Representatives begins discussing measures to impeach Trump after about 218 Democrats signed a memorandum calling for his removal after his supporters incited a "rebellion". It is expected that a vote on the decision will take place during the session.
