During Thursday's speech, Biden formally introduced Judge Merrick Garland as his candidate for the Secretary of Justice, the nation's highest law enforcement position.

Garland is currently a judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in Washington.

He was a candidate for the presidency of the U.S. Supreme Court, which was blocked by Republicans in the Senate after President Barack Obama nominated him to replace the late Judge Antonin Scalia in 2016.

Biden assured that Garland would help him restore the Justice Department's independence so that it would serve the interests of the people, not the presidency, pledging to rebuild confidence in the rule of law again.

Biden had emphasized that his outgoing counterpart Donald Trump is not above the law, and justice applies to everyone.

Biden added in a speech today, Thursday, that justice will be applied to everyone after the events of the congressional storming by a number of Trump supporters yesterday.

He pointed out that what happened yesterday was not surprising because Trump ridiculed the law and the constitution for 4 years, stressing that the latter does not tell citizens the truth and prefers to side with the opponents of the United States.

Biden indicated that Trump has taken many actions that harm American interests.
