Biden emphasized that Attorney General Candidate Merrick Garland, a veteran of more than two decades in the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, would restore the integrity of the Department of Justice as well as restore Americans' confidence in the law.

Garland, 68, recently served as the chief justice of the Metropolitan Circuit and previously received a nomination to serve on the US Supreme Court in 2016 under the Obama administration.

His career at the Ministry of Justice included time as Deputy Assistant Prosecutor for the Criminal Division and as Deputy Principal Assistant Prosecutor.

Biden is expected to formally announce his appointment Thursday, along with senior Justice Department members, such as Lisa Monaco as Deputy Attorney General and former Justice Department civil rights director Vanita Gupta, as assistant attorney general.

Monaco previously spent 15 years at the Department of Justice and held the position of Chief of Staff at the FBI.

It is clear that the Justice Department, under the Biden administration, will take a different course, especially in issues of civil rights and security force policies.

Earlier today, the US Congress approved Biden's victory in the presidential election, after winning 306 votes in the electoral college, compared to 232 votes for Trump.

A majority of the members of Congress rejected Republican objections to the election results in Pennsylvania, Nevada, Michigan and Arizona.

On Wednesday, crowds of President Donald Trump's supporters stormed the police barriers around the Congress building. Supporters of the US President went up to the main yard of the building and raised pro-Trump flags.

The storming coincided with a joint session of the sheikhs and representatives, to validate the victory of the US President-elect Biden, chanting slogans rejecting the results of the US presidential elections that resulted in the victory of his Democratic rival, Joe Biden.

Washington DC Police Chief Robert J. Conti said that 4 people, including a woman, died during the protests in front of the US Congress building last night.
