Former Kosovo President Hashem Taqi was arrested and transferred to the Kosovo Court Detention Center in The Hague, Netherlands, to face war crimes charges.

Taqi, 52, and three other former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) are accused of overseeing illegal detention centers where opponents of the movement were held in inhumane conditions and tortured and sometimes killed.

Taqi denied any wrongdoing. He told a press conference in Pristina, the capital of Kosovo, that he felt the need to submit his resignation “to protect the security of the country.

The European Union welcomed the pious cooperation with Kosovo's specialized courts, where he is expected to appear before a judge for preliminary proceedings in the coming days.

The court was established in 2015 to hear cases of alleged crimes during the war that led to Kosovo's independence from Serbia in 2008, ten years after the war. The court is governed by Kosovo law, but international judges and prosecutors work there.
