Rio de Janeiro Sets a Guinness World Record for the Biggest New Year’s Eve Celebration
The city of Rio de Janeiro officially entered the Guinness World Records on Tuesday by hosting the largest New Year’s Eve celebration in the world.
Around 2.5 million people gathered on Copacabana Beach to enjoy free music concerts and celebrate the arrival of the new year.
🏆 Official Guinness Recognition
A representative from Guinness World Records handed the official record plaque to Eduardo Paes, the Mayor of Rio de Janeiro, on the main stage of this year’s celebration.
The ceremony took place in front of the iconic Copacabana Palace Hotel, during the main event scheduled for Wednesday night into Thursday.
🎶 Music, Culture, and a Legendary Artist
One of the biggest highlights of the celebration will be the participation of Brazilian music legend Gilberto Gil, who is set to perform during the event.
The Rio City Hall said in an official statement that the record was awarded after a full review of all Guinness standards.
The evaluation considered:
- The record-breaking number of attendees
- The wide artistic program
- The large geographic scale of the event
- The strong cultural importance of the celebration
📊 How the Crowd Was Counted
The participation of 2.5 million people was confirmed using images captured by drones flying above Copacabana Beach.
Mayor Eduardo Paes said:
“We are honored to receive this recognition from Guinness. We know that no city in the world organizes events that bring together this many people so consistently.”
🎇 A Tradition Loved Around the World
Every year on December 31, Copacabana Beach welcomes massive crowds celebrating New Year’s Eve.
Most people wear white clothes, a traditional symbol of peace and good luck, while enjoying spectacular fireworks shows.
The 2025–2026 edition promises:
- 12 minutes of fireworks
- 1,200 drones lighting up the sky over Rio
🚓 Security, Stages, and Tourism
In total, 13 stages were set up across the city for free concerts.
Three stages were located in Copacabana alone.
A strong security plan was put in place, including the deployment of 3,500 police officers.
Rio de Janeiro also welcomed around 2 million foreign tourists between January and November — a new record — despite ongoing security challenges.

Rio de Janeiro’s New Year’s Eve celebration is no longer just a party — it is now a world record event. With millions of people, music legends, fireworks, drones, and global attention, Rio once again proved why it is one of the most iconic celebration cities on Earth.
