Jana Aliwa and Shahd Saeed : Cyclist Jana Aliwa Discusses Injury and Controversy at National Championship
Jana Aliwa, a member of the Egyptian national cycling team, recently opened up about a severe injury she sustained on April 28 during a race at the National Championship. In a revealing interview on the "Box to Box" program on etc TV, Alio shared her perspective on the incident and the subsequent fallout.
The Incident
Alio recounted the day of the race, explaining how her competitor, Shahd Saeed, who was already qualified for the Olympics, was allegedly intent on securing a medal to improve her rank. "I am 100% certain that she intended to harm me during the race," Alio stated. She described how Saeed, under instructions from their coach, stayed close to her throughout the race and collided with her bike twice. As the race neared its finish, Saeed allegedly grabbed Alio by the arm and pulled her to the ground.
Injuries Sustained
The fall resulted in a broken collarbone and multiple bruises for Alio, necessitating a second surgery to remove the pins. Despite several attempts, she has not been able to ride her bike since the accident. Alio trains with the October 6 Club and is currently undergoing rehabilitation.
Aftermath and Legal Proceedings
Following the race, Alio lost consciousness and was hospitalized. The hospital reported the incident to the police, and a legal case is ongoing. The Cycling Federation suspended Saeed for one year from domestic road races but allowed her to compete internationally and in track events.
Lack of Apology and Support
Alio expressed her disappointment at not receiving an apology from Saeed or the head coach. She also mentioned hostile statements made by the head coach, accusing her and her sister of being envious of Saeed. Additionally, the coach alleged that Alio's sister won a race by using a motorized bike, a claim Alio vehemently denies.
Support from the Club
The October 6 Club covered the cost of Alio's surgery. Despite the severity of her injuries and the ongoing legal battle, Alio has not received any communication from the Cycling Federation's officials.
Conclusion
In closing, Jana Alio remained hopeful for justice. "God will reveal the truth," she said. With two months having passed since the incident and the grueling process of surgery and rehabilitation underway, she questioned why she should meet with the federation's president when no one from their side has reached out to her.
