The Berlin International Film Festival has announced the addition of a new section named "Perspectives," aimed at providing a larger platform for emerging filmmakers. This new independent competition will feature up to 14 feature films from around the world.

Competition and Jury

The "Perspectives" competition will have a jury of three members who will decide on the best feature film award, valued at €50,000. The prize money, sponsored by the Society for the Management of Film and Television Rights (GWFF), will be shared between the directors and producers of the winning film.

Origins and Focus

This new section evolves from the Best First Feature Award at the Berlin International Film Festival, which has been awarded in collaboration with GWFF since 2006. Previously, nominated films were spread across various sections of the festival, but "Perspectives" will now consolidate these films into a focused competition.

Festival Director's Statement

Tricia Tuttle, the festival's director, commented, "Perspectives will provide a more distinct platform for exceptional new filmmakers from around the world. We are looking for debut feature films that represent a global spectrum of voices, have bold cinematic language, develop intriguing perspectives, and offer new ways of seeing the world. I would like to thank GWFF for their decades-long support of our commitment to new talent and for continuing to accompany us in reorganizing the award."

Selection Process

The films for the "Perspectives" section will be selected by Tricia Tuttle in collaboration with the co-directors of film programming and the heads of the Panorama, Forum, and Generation sections. Priority will be given to world premieres, although films that have premiered in their home countries may also be considered at the director's discretion.

Finally

The introduction of the "Perspectives" section at the Berlin International Film Festival underscores the festival's dedication to nurturing new talent and providing a global platform for innovative voices in cinema. This initiative is set to enhance the visibility of young filmmakers and their work, contributing to the richness and diversity of the festival.
