Indian weightlifter Saikum Mirabai Chanu became India's national champion after winning the silver medal in women's weightlifting at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics after lifting a total of 202kg in the women's 49kg category.
When Mirabai, 26, returned from Tokyo, before the many honors were over, she looked for the truck drivers who helped her during her early days as a professional.
The Olympic champion was able to find the drivers and invited them to a party in her modest home, where her family celebrated them and presented them with gifts.
After returning from Tokyo, she explained that the truck drivers donated on their own to give her a free daily trip from her residence to the training center, which enabled her to attend the preparation and development program and greatly reduced training expenses, which helped her focus on carrying weights only.
Mirabai was riding next to the truckload of goods on a daily 25-kilometre journey from her home to the training ground.
Mirabai Chanu's mother, Saikhum Aungbe Tumbi Devi, who runs a tea stall in the village, said the trucks would change their way to pass the stall to pick up her daughter most days in an invaluable gesture.
