New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announces his resignation after sexual harassment accusation
New York Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo announced his resignation on Tuesday after 11 women accused him of sexual harassment.
"I believe that in light of the circumstances, the best way to help now is to withdraw," Cuomo said in a statement, adding that "my resignation will be effective within 14 days."
Cuomo, 63, has denied the accusation of sexual harassment, which was documented last week in a report by the New York attorney general's office.
But he said he wanted to make a "very deep apology" to any woman who was offended by his behaviour.
He added: “I was always very close to people. I admit that I embrace and accept people spontaneously, whether they are women or men. I've done this all my life.”
"It never occurred to me to cross the line with anyone, but I did not realize" the line between what is permissible and what is not, he added.
Cuomo will succeed Assistant Governor Kathleen Hochhol, who is also a Democrat.
