America: Storm Henry makes landfall in Rhode Island
Tropical Storm Henry reached the northeastern coast of the United States on Sunday afternoon, local time, and brought heavy rain with it.
The US National Hurricane Center said that the storm hit the coast near the town of Westerly in Rhode Island, and its speed reached about 95 km per hour.
Rhode Island Governor Dan Mackie was expecting "the effects of severe winds, blackouts and flooding" in the morning.
Earlier yesterday, the US National Hurricane Center downgraded Henry from hurricane to tropical storm.
A report on the situation stated that after making landfall, Henry's strength would likely continue to weaken. Heavy rain and flooding continued to pose significant threats to parts of the northeastern United States as of Monday night.
A "hurricane warning" is in effect for Long Island, Rhode Island and Connecticut. Flood warnings were issued to more than 35 million people.
The National Weather Service upgraded Henry to a hurricane on Saturday only.
US President Joe Biden has promised to provide support to seven states that will be affected by Hurricane Henry. The storm is expected to weaken as it moves inland.
