White House serves burgers to hundreds for Independence Day
US President Joe Biden will mark the 245th anniversary of US independence today, Sunday, with a traditional celebration in hopes of overcoming the Corona virus pandemic.
After spending the Independence Day holiday buying cherry pies in Michigan and playing golf near his family's Delaware home, Biden will return to the White House, where he will host about 1,000 people for burgers and a fireworks display. Such a celebration implies a dose of nostalgia in a country burdened by the restrictions of the pandemic, burdens that have become lighter with the widespread availability of vaccines, but they have not gone away.
"On Sunday, we will celebrate our independence as a country and the progress we've made against the virus," Biden told a group of teachers on Friday. "We have an opportunity to start over in the coming days," he added.
The doors of the White House will open to hundreds of invited guests in the largest event ever since Biden's inauguration.
