Dinant, a Belgian city experiencing the worst floods in decades
Dinant, southern Belgium, was hit by the worst torrential rain in decades on Saturday after a two-hour thunderstorm turned streets into rivers, sweeping cars and sidewalks on its way, but causing no deaths.
That city had avoided the country's deadliest flood 10 days ago, killing 37 people in southeastern Belgium and causing more deaths in Germany, but the violence of yesterday's storm stunned many.
Dozens of cars were swept away by rainwater, which flowed through steep streets, piled up at crossroads, taking stones, pavements, and even bits of asphalt, while residents watched these events in horror from their windows.
The authorities have not yet issued an estimate of the losses, although RTL television quoted local authorities as saying the damage would be "significant".
The storm also caused just as much chaos, without casualties, in the small town of Anhi, a few kilometers north of Dinant.
