Rick Carlisle resigns as coach of the Dallas Mavericks NBA Basketball League
Rick Carlisle decided to quit coaching the Dallas Mavericks after he held this job for 13 seasons, during which the team won the NBA title in 2011, the club announced Thursday.
"Rick has informed me of his decision to leave his position as coach," Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said in a statement. "Besides being a fantastic coach, he was also a friend and confidant of me...I want to thank Rick for everything he has done for this franchise and this city."
The 61-year-old ends his career with the Mavericks with the honor of being the only coach to win the league title with the club in 2011, led by former German star Dirk Nowestke, who and his companions beat the Miami Heat in the final 4-2.
In addition to leading the Mavericks to their only league title, Carlisle managed to make the team present in the playoffs 9 times out of 13 seasons he spent with him, as well as the largest number of victories in the club's history, which he reached in 2008 (555 wins against 478 defeats).
Carlisle's history is distinguished by being among only 14 people who won the league title as players and coaches, having previously won it in 1986 when he was defending the colors of the Boston Celtics.
Carlisle's resignation comes a day after the departure of the club's director of basketball operations Don Nelson, who was one of the people who played a key role in the club's first and last title campaign in 2011.
