Huawei launches its own operating system (Harmony OS) for smartphones
Huawei has unveiled the Harmony OS for mobile phones on its devices, in an attempt to adapt to the loss of access to Google services for mobile devices.
It is expected that Huawei will announce the launch of (Harmony OS) today, Wednesday, for various devices, including smartphones and tablets. Huawei remains cut off from core US technologies, including Google's mobile services and some chips needed to power its devices, after the US blacklisted it, saying they could aid Chinese espionage efforts; It is an accusation the company strongly denies.
Huawei, once the world's largest smartphone maker, dropped out of the world's top five phone companies last year, after it fell and was replaced by South Korea's Samsung, according to data from market research firm Canalys.
Other Chinese smartphone makers, such as Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo, have also since overtaken Huawei in terms of global sales. Huawei is currently ranked seventh in the world and third in China, after smartphone shipments decreased by 50% in the first quarter of this year compared to last year.
In addition, Huawei sold its brand of budget smartphones last November, as it sought to mitigate the impact of US sanctions. Huawei's introduction of the Harmony operating system comes as an alternative to its lack of access to Google services, especially in smartphones it sells abroad.
