After 123 days of handcuffing them together to save their relationship again, Ukrainian duo Alexander Kodlay and Victoria Postovitova broke up immediately after breaking their handcuffs in front of the national television camera, and said the experience brought them "uncomfortable facts".
The duo, 33-year-old Kudlay and his girlfriend Postovitova, 29, tried to save their relationship from falling apart last Valentine's Day in a strange way, as they decided to tie their hands together for three months, but their attempt did not succeed in the end and they said they preferred to separate, according to the newspaper. During this experiment, the Kharkiv duo documented to their social media followers how they did everything together, from shopping for food and exercising to taking turns using the bathroom.
"I think what they did will be a good lesson for us and other Ukrainian spouses not to repeat what we did," Postovitova told Reuters news agency. She noted that "personal space" was what she missed most, and that she felt her boyfriend "didn't pay enough attention" to her while they were tied together.
In turn, Cudlay said he did not regret resorting to "desperate measures" to save the relationship, adding that the restrictions helped him understand that they were not "like-minded people". "We are not on the same wavelength, we are completely different," he said.
The duo plan to sell the handcuffs at an online auction and donate part of the money to charity. Some media reported that they wanted to sell these handcuffs for $3 million.
Their shackles were slashed with a giant cutter in Kiev at the Unity Monument, where Postovitova gleefully exclaimed, "Finally I'm free...I want to live my personal life freely, and my independent personality to grow away from Alexander."
