US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken is leaving for the United States after a tour of the Middle East
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken left Jordan on Thursday morning, returning to the United States after a two-day tour in the Middle East, during which he sought to reinforce the ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinians.
The Blinken plane took off from Amman to stop at a technical station in Shannon, Ireland, before returning to Washington, according to reporters accompanying him.
Blinken met, on Wednesday evening, Jordan’s King Abdullah II, and held talks with Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi.
Blinken wrote in a tweet Thursday morning after his meeting with Safadi, “We have shown our joint support for the ceasefire and efforts to enforce its respect. Palestinians and Israelis have the right to live in safety and enjoy the same freedom, prosperity and democracy. ”
On Wednesday, the foreign minister met in Cairo with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, whose country played a pivotal role in reaching a cessation of confrontations after 11 days of violence between Israel and Hamas.
Blinken stressed during the tour that began on Tuesday in Israel and then the occupied West Bank, Washington's determination to "rebuild" the relationship with the Palestinians, stressing at the same time the "right" of Israel to defend itself, as well as reiterating his country's support for the Israeli and Palestinian "two-state solution". Contradicting this with the position of the previous US administration.
