The British news agency (BA Media) quoted Rashford, 23, as saying that he had received "at least 70 racist insults" in the aftermath of United's penalty shootout defeat to Villarreal of Spain on Wednesday in the final of the continental competition.

Rashford explained that he had received a torrent of racist abuse when he opened his phone, and revealed that one of these violations came in a direct message from a person claiming to be a math teacher.

Manchester United said in a later tweet that its players had been subjected to "shameful racist abuse."

“At least 70 racist insults have been recorded on my social media accounts so far,” Rashford wrote on his Twitter account. For those of you who are working to make me feel worse than I really feel, good luck trying. ”

"I am even more angry because one of the abusers who left a mountain of monkey pictures is a math teacher with an open profile," said the United player. He teaches children !! He knows that he can racially offend freely without consequences. ”

"He is disgusted by the online hate and abuse targeting Rashford and other players on social media after last night's match," Manchester United said in a statement, adding, "We strongly condemn this."

It is not the first time that Rashford has been subjected to abuse on social media. In January, the Greater Manchester Police investigated racist comments sent to him and several other players.

Last month, English football, along with other sports bodies, united to boycott social media for a period of 4 days to urge companies to take a stronger stance on racist abuse on social media.
