Demands the resignation of the Portuguese government due to the champions' final
Voices in the Portuguese government, including Prime Minister Antonio Costa, are increasingly calling for the resignation due to double standards in implementing anti-COVID-19 measures and leniency with British fans' excesses in the UEFA Champions League Final in Porto.
"The organization of the final match gave a terrible picture of Portugal and it will have unexpected consequences," said Francisco Rodriguez dos Santos, leader of the Socialist and Democratic Party.
Although the Portuguese government bans fans from attending national sports competitions and bans street gatherings, it has agreed that more than 15,000 spectators will attend the Champions League final between Chelsea and Manchester City in Porto on Saturday.
The government promised "exceptional" security measures, but British fans were on the city streets without masks, without keeping the distance, and without respecting the rules set by the Portuguese authorities.
Rodriguez dos Santos demanded the dismissal of the Interior Ministry, Eduardo Cabrita, which was also called for by the leader of the extreme right (Chiga) Andre Ventura, due to the "humiliation" of the Portuguese.
Politician Vento da Costa went further and demanded the removal of the prime minister.
Costa avoided responding to these criticisms last weekend, and the government remains silent on the torrent of criticism.
