Corona prevents Villarreal President Fernando Roig from attending the European League final
Villarreal president Fernando Roig will not be able to attend the Europa League final against Manchester United today, Wednesday, after European Union (UEFA) organizers said he would not join the team's headquarters in Gdansk following his recent recovery from Covid-19.
Villarreal said in a statement on the day of the final match that Roig traveled to Gdansk in Poland via a private plane and adhered to the health rules, but UEFA believes that not enough time has passed since his infection with the virus to allow him to mix with the team.
The Spanish club said, "Since it is impossible for the president to share this historic opportunity from within with the rest of the traveling team, he decided to return to Spain."
Billionaire Roig, founder of Mercadona, became president of Villarreal in 1997 and helped him rise to the ranks of the top clubs in Spain.
