The Swedish government has introduced a bill that aims to tighten immigration laws in the country after five years of adopting temporary measures introduced in the aftermath of the 2015 migration crisis.

The bill specifically refers to granting asylum seekers "temporary residence permits."

According to the draft law that was drafted, refugees will receive temporary residency for a period of 3 years, and those whose application to obtain residency is rejected but their need for protection is proven will be granted a residence for a period of 13 months.

The stays of both categories can be extended in the event that the risks remain.

According to the new draft law, the person applying for family unification will be able to provide for his family members.

Although the provisions of the new law are consistent with the temporary, it represents a more restrictive approach compared to previous legislations.

Statistics from the Swedish Migration Board show that the Scandinavian country of 10.3 million people and known for its generous immigration policies granted asylum and family reunification to more than 400,000 people between 2010 and 2019.
