Evanston, Illinois, is preparing to become the first American city to pay compensation to its dark-skinned residents.
Authorities in the city north of Chicago approved an unprecedented measure in 2019.
Under that measure, money is paid to residents of African descent.
Compensating for the "gaps in opportunity and wealth" they suffered as a result of racial discrimination in the city's history.
The authorities also approved the establishment of a special compensation fund, and pledged to distribute $ 10 million over the next ten years.
The first payment will be $ 400,000 to help black citizens affected by racism solve their housing problems.
Under this proposal, $ 25,000 would be paid to every person in the city who could prove that he or his ancestors were black.
