The former Argentine president, Carlos Menem, died today, Sunday, at the age of 91. After a long struggle with the disease.
According to Argentine media, Monem, who comes from a family of Syrian immigrants, celebrated his 90th birthday in early July.
He served as head of state from 1989 to 1999, and ran in the 2003 elections, losing to Nestor Kirchner.
After leaving the presidency, Monem faced criminal charges on corruption charges, especially regarding the export of weapons to Ecuador and Croatia, and in 2019 he was sentenced to nearly four years in prison for embezzlement.
