Denmark has announced that it plans to build a huge artificial island in the North Sea to become the main center for renewable energy at an estimated cost of 210 billion Danish kroner (33.97 billion dollars) with the participation of the private sector, with the Danish state owning the majority of the shares.

Denmark plans to build the largest floating renewable energy plant in its history

The Danish Energy Agency said, in a statement today, that the project will be located in waters 80 km from the coast of Gotland, and its first phase will include the construction of nearly 200 offshore wind turbines with a capacity of 3 gigawatts.

The agency, which is part of the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Government Utilities, added that the project's capacity is to be expanded to 10 gigawatts, which is sufficient to power 10 million homes in Europe.

She explained that the area of the artificial island ranges between 120,000 and 460,000 square meters upon completion of the project.

"The project is the largest in the history of Denmark and will make it the largest energy center in the North Sea by taking advantage of the huge potential of the European offshore winds, in addition to enhancing future cooperation with neighboring European countries," said Danish Minister of Climate Dan Jurgensen.

It is worth noting that Denmark is a pioneer in the field of wind energy, as it established the world's first offshore wind farm in the water in 1991.

The European Union aims to reach its wind-generated capacity to 60 gigawatts by 2030, and 300 gigawatts by the middle of this century.
