The Michigan Capitol closed due to security threats.
Several lawmakers said on Twitter today, Thursday, that the Michigan State Capitol has been closed due to a security threat being investigated by police.
Congressman Abdullah Hammoud said, "The Capitol building in Lansing has been closed for this day due to the threats that have been made."
Hammoud, Senator Mallory MacMurrow and other local lawmakers shared screenshots of a security warning they received from the Michigan State Police Department.
Due to a threat received early this morning, January 7, 2021, the Capitol building has been temporarily closed to all members and staff.
The warning said Michigan State Police was investigating.
The new threats come just a day after supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the US Capitol building as Congress was close to certifying his electoral defeat of Joe Biden.
Earlier in the day, protesters from Trump stormed the US Capitol, destroyed property and seized the Round Hall, as Congress was trying to validate the results of Democrat Joe Biden's presidential victory.
The US Congress resumed the validation session on the third of November, after protesters stormed the US Capitol earlier on Wednesday.
Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said in a statement on Wednesday that the Washington, D.C. National Guard has been deployed to reinforce local law enforcement agencies working to restore order at the U.S. Capitol Building.
A Sputnik reporter from the scene reported that the opening podium and rotating hall of the U.S. Capitol were under protesters' control. There were occasional clashes between demonstrators and police near the building, and the police used tear gas again.
