Cecily Tyson, an icon of American cinema, dies
Cecily Tyson's most famous role was her roles in historical works such as the 1972 movie "Sounder", in which she played the wife of a farmer in Louisiana, a drama set during the Depression era in the South.
Her life was full of obstacles and marked by periods of turmoil. During her childhood, she suffered from extreme poverty and was a deeply religious mother who considered her daughter's career choice "wrong".
Before her departure, Tyson had said that she had turned down many of the roles that had been offered her, as she had always pledged to accept only "strength, pride, and dignity" roles for African Americans.
She stated: "Because of her relentless selection, she was unemployed for months and sometimes for many years, even after her success in the role of a farmer's wife in Louisiana in the movie (Sounder) and her Oscar nomination."
