A 90-year-old woman became the first person to receive a COVID-19 vaccination in the nationwide vaccination program that began.

Margaret Kennan, who turns 91 next week, said it was "the best early birthday gift".

She received the injection at 06:31 a.m. GMT - the first of the 800,000 doses of the Pfizer-Bionic vaccine, which will be given to patients in the coming weeks.

Approximately 4 million doses are expected to arrive by the end of this month.

The centers in Britain will vaccinate people over the age of 80, and some health and healthcare personnel first, with the aim of protecting the most vulnerable and returning life to normal.

What did Margaret say?

Margaret Kennan was vaccinated at the University Hospital in Coventry.

She said: "I feel so special because I am the first person to be vaccinated against Covid-19. It is the best early gift I have been hoping for for my birthday, and it means that I can finally look forward to spending time with my family and friends in the new year, after spending most of the year alone."

She added, "I am unable to thank May, who gave me the dose, and the health insurance staff enough, they took great care of me, and my advice is to anyone who offered the vaccine to take it, if I can take it when I am 90, you can take it too."

Britain is the first country in the world to start using the Pfizer vaccine, after regulators approved its use last week.

And vaccination is not compulsory.
