David Webster's portrait is valued at between $ 14 million and $ 23 million

The Royal Opera House in London announced that it will sell a painting dating back to the seventies by David Hockney, as part of its effort to raise money to overcome the "Covid-19" pandemic, which represents the worst crisis in its history.

The painting, a portrait of David Webster, will go on sale at Christie's auction on October 22nd. Estimates of the painting range from 11 to 18 million pounds ($ 14 to 23 million), Christie's said.

"As we face the biggest crisis in our history, the sale of David Hockney's wonderful portrait of Sir David Webster is an essential part of our recovery strategy," Alex Bird, CEO of the Royal Opera House, said in a statement.

"The proceeds will be used to ensure that the world's greatest artists can return to our theaters," he added.

Like what happened to other cultural venues across Britain, the Royal Opera House was forced to close its doors last March with the intensification of the first wave of the "Covid-19" outbreak, and it has been unable to generate income since that time.

Webster, the subject of the painting, ran the Royal Opera House from 1945 to 1970.
