A spokesman for the office of the Petersburg Governor, Alexander Biglov, said that the governor held a meeting on the ongoing preparations in the "Alexander Nevsky" cathedral, in the presence of the cathedral's patron, Bishop Nizari Kronstadt.
The spokesman said that the photo exhibition entitled "In the Name of the Saint Prince," which highlights historical and religious landmarks related to Saint Alexander Nevsky in northwestern Russia and abroad, will become the first event for large-scale celebrations. The exhibition will be held on December 4-24.
It is noteworthy that Alexander Nevsky (1221 - 1263) was a prince of Novgorod, Kiev, and Vladimir, and he scored many victories in the battles with Sweden and the Crusaders. He also became famous as a prominent politician and diplomat. It was sanctified by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1547.
His remains were transferred in 1723 from Vladimir to the Alexander Nevsky Monastery in Petersburg, where he has been considered since that time its heavenly patron.
