According to the attending physician, Biden, 78, sprained his ankle on Saturday when he slipped his foot while playing Major, a German Shepherd.

To be extra careful, the next day Biden visited an orthopedic clinic in Newark, Delaware.

Biden's personal physician, Kevin O'Connor, said the initial X-ray examination did not indicate a "visible fracture", which required a more accurate CT scan.

According to O'Connor, subsequent examinations showed that two of the small bones in the middle of Biden's right foot sustained minor fractures.

The doctor expected that Biden would need to wear medical shoes "for several weeks" to be able to walk.

On Twitter on Sunday, President Donald Trump tweeted: "Wishes for a speedy recovery!"

On Monday, Biden is due to receive his first daily presidential summary of events, a top-secret intelligence briefing. This became possible after announcing the start of the transition process about a week ago, and Trump's approval of the start of the official transfer of power to President-elect Biden.

Biden is the oldest on the list of US presidents when he takes office, scheduled for January 20.

Biden completed his seventy-eighth year earlier this month. And it is expected that, in this case, Biden's health will be of interest to allies and opponents alike.

In a medical report released in December, Doctor O'Connor said Biden was in good health to successfully carry out the presidency.

Biden intends to bring his two dogs, Champ and Major, with him to the White House, both of whom are of the same species.

Biden and his wife, Jill, obtained the dog Major from a dog shelter in Delaware, and it was officially announced in November 2018.

As for Champ, he lived with the Biden family in Capitol Hill, Washington, DC, when Barack Obama was president, and Biden was his deputy.
