The 21-year-old Filipina — one of the fastest-rising stars in women's tennis — has confirmed she will represent the Philippines at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, even though it means missing the China Open in Beijing, a mandatory WTA 1000 event for a player ranked as high as she is.
That decision could cost her a $10,000 fine and a zero-point ranking penalty. And it has turned into one of the loudest debates in tennis this month.
The clash: Nagoya or Beijing?
The problem is simple: the dates overlap. Tennis at the Asian Games runs September 27 to October 3 at the Higashiyama Park Tennis Center in Nagoya. The China Open starts in Beijing on September 30 and runs until October 11. She cannot be in both places.
Eala and injured world No. 15 Victoria Mboko were the only Top 20 players missing from the Beijing entry list, according to Philippine outlet Daily Tribune.
Why the WTA can punish her
Under the 2026 WTA rulebook, players who qualify for a mandatory WTA 1000 tournament must play it, unless they get an exemption — for example for age or long-term injury, as GMA News explained. Skip one without permission and two things can happen:

Why the Asian Games matter so much to her
This isn't just a medal. The men's and women's singles champions in Nagoya earn an automatic place at the LA 2028 Olympics, as ESPN reported. For a country that has never had a tennis player qualify this way, that is huge.
There's history too. The Philippines hasn't won Asian Games tennis gold since 1962. And Eala has unfinished business: at the 2023 Games in Hangzhou she took home two bronze medals — one in women's singles and one in mixed doubles with Francis Alcantara.
Her road to gold also got easier. China's Zheng Qinwen and Wang Xinyu chose Beijing over Nagoya, leaving Eala as the highest-ranked player in the women's draw and the top seed in both singles and doubles.
Former ATP stars to the WTA: don't do it

Back home, the support is loud. PHILTA secretary-general John Rey Tiangco said the federation respects the WTA's process but backs Eala's decision fully. Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham Tolentino put it even more simply:

Some lawmakers went further. Senator Erwin Tulfo argued that if Eala is fined for representing her people, the government should step in and help pay it, according to Al Jazeera.
