French singer Angélique Kidjo wins the International Prize for Music of the Polar Countries French-Benine singer Angelique Kidjo won the International Music Award for the Arctic Countries, sharing it with Chris Blackwell, founder of the British production company “Island Records” and Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. The 63-year-old Kidjo, who has previously won five Grammy Awards, has been singing for more than 30 years in her father's and mother's languages, namely Fon and Yoruba, as well as in French and English. The Swedish jury members affirmed that “Kidjo is an inspiration, and among the best composers and singers in the world.” And Time magazine called her "Africa's Diva". As for the British Chris Blackwell (85 years), he established the “Island Records” company in 1959, which became one of the most prominent companies after dealing with Bob Marley, Cat Stevens, and the two bands “Roxy Music” and “U2”. The jury noted that the winner, Arvo Bart (87 years old), is “the most played living composer in the world,” and is credited with innovating in the seventies of the last century a technique in musical writing, which is “Tintinapoli.” Last year, Iggy Pop and Diane Warren won the International Prize for Music of the Polar Countries, which was founded by former ABBA manager Stig Andersen in 1989. The winners are awarded their prizes in addition to 600,000 crowns (about $58,000) during a ceremony.
