Guangzhou, a commercial and industrial hub of 15 million people north of Hong Kong, reported 20 new infections last week.

The number of injuries is small, compared to the thousands of daily cases in India, but it annoyed the Chinese authorities, who believed they had put the disease under control.

The official "Global Times" newspaper quoted the health authorities as saying that the spread of infection was "fast and strong".

The test order, issued today, has been applied to residents of five streets in Liwan District, in the city center. Open markets, childcare centers and entertainment venues have also been closed. Eating inside restaurants has also been banned, while schools have been told to stop personal attendance of students. In parts of four surrounding areas, citizens were ordered to limit outdoor activity.

China reports a few new cases every day, but it says almost all of them have been infected overseas.

The official number of deaths on the mainland was 4,636 out of 91,061 confirmed cases.

On Saturday, the National Health Commission reported two new cases of local infection in Guangzhou, and 14 cases in other parts of the country, which it said came from abroad.

State media say most of the recent infections in Guangzhou are believed to be related to a 75-year-old man who was discovered on May 21 with a strain that first appeared in India. Most of the others lived together or attended a dinner with the man.

This infection has spread to the nearby city of Nanshan, where one new confirmed case and two asymptomatic cases were reported today, after people from Guangzhou were tested, according to the "Global Times" newspaper.
