A government spokesman in Tanzania said that the late Vice President, Samia Hassan, will be sworn in today, Friday, as the country's president, in a historic move that will make her the first woman to preside over Tanzania.


Her assumption of the post came after the announcement of the death of President John Magufuli at the age of 61 from heart disease on Wednesday, more than two weeks after his last public appearance.


Under the constitution, the vice president must hold office for the remainder of Magufuli's five-year term, which began last year after he won a second term.


Samia Hassan Salouhi will become the first woman who is veiled and Muslim in Africa.


I was born on January 27, 1960 in Zanzibar, which is semi-autonomous, and the percentage of Muslims in it is about 99%.


She has held the position of Vice President since 2015 and was Minister of State in the Office of the Vice President.


She has represented Tanzania in most international meetings and at all meetings of the United Nations, the African Union, the Southern African Development Community, and the East African Community held outside Tanzania.


She has worked in politics since 2000, and was first elected as a member of the House of Representatives in Zanzibar for a special seat in 2000.


She was appointed as a minister by the Zanzibar president at the time, Amani Abeid Karume


She was elected to the National Assembly after a landslide victory in 2010, and joined the Cabinet in 2014. In the same year, she was elected chairperson of the body charged with drafting the country's new constitution.


She was selected by President Magufuli, as the vice president, ahead of the country's general elections of 2015, and she was re-elected in 2020.


She is married to Hafez Amir, who is a retired official in the agricultural sector, and she has three sons, the most famous of whom is her daughter Moano Hafez Amir, she is the only one in the family who followed her mother's footsteps politically.
