The discovery of the new Corona strain in France ... and a curfew in Marseille

The French authorities have said that they are racing against time to contain the new (British) strain that is most contagious from the Covid-19 Corona virus, which has now been discovered in the French port of Marseille on the Mediterranean and in the Alps, according to French newspapers.

The Mayor of Marseille, Benoit Bayan, said that between seven and eight people had tested positive for the new strain in the city, while 30 others had been tested as well.

"At the moment, every minute counts in preventing the spread of this English viral mutation," Bayan told reporters.

The local health authority in the Hots-Alpes region, home to several ski resorts that attract British visitors, said an alternative was discovered there as well.

France has the seventh highest number of corona deaths in the world, and the number of deaths increased by 151 during the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 67,750 deaths, while the number of new confirmed cases of the infected increased by 15,944 cases, to about 2.78 million.

The new strain was first discovered in England late last year, and the British government blamed it for the increase in the number of cases threatening the collapse of hospitals in the United Kingdom.

After discovering the strain in Marseille, the French authorities have added the city and the surrounding area to the list of banned French administrations, as the curfew begins in the evening at 6 pm, two hours before the rest of the country.

Strasbourg and Dijon also have longer curfew hours, while the curfew begins at 8 pm in Paris and most other departments.

France is preparing to roll back the curfew due to the epidemic in several regions with numbers dropping at the earliest opportunity.

But President Emmanuel Macron's government has said it will not rule out tougher measures if the Covid-19 situation in France worsens.

The government is striving to accelerate the launch of the vaccine in the country, an endeavor that has been criticized by politicians in all fields, given their great slowdown.

France had only given 7,000 injections more than a week after launching the vaccination campaign on December 27, lagging far behind most Western countries.

The government said a second vaccine, manufactured by the American company Moderna, arrives in France on Monday.
