Putin celebrates the Epiphany by diving in frozen waters
President Vladimir Putin participated in the Russian-style Epiphany celebrations in Moscow. As tradition requires the head of state to plunge into the frozen waters of Seliger Lake in Tver Province, north of Moscow.
The Russian authorities have equipped about 40 diving spots in Russia, and secured more than 14,000 lifeguards for the safety of the participants across the country.
Orthodox Christians in Russia and other countries celebrate the Epiphany. It is one of the most important Christian holidays, and its roots go back to the baptism of Christ in the Jordan River.
On this occasion, religious services are held in churches and water blessings are held by the clergy. And the believers immerse themselves in pools of freezing water.
