After the US Capitol protest ... the authorities in Germany strengthened the Reichstag guard

A report by a German newspaper revealed that moves are taking place in Berlin to reinforce police guarding the Reichstag building - the German parliament - and came in response to the occupation of the US Capitol building in the January 6 events during the "Stop Theft" protests that took place last Wednesday in Washington, DC.

The German parliament has strengthened security measures - several days after protesters evacuated the US Congress as it met to confirm Joe Biden as the elected president.

Bundestag President Wolfgang Schaeuble informed the deputies in a letter, carried by the newspaper "Bild am Sonntag" today, Sunday.

"The Berlin State Police arranged to reinforce their forces around the Reichstag," Schaeuble wrote.

The spokesman reportedly asked the German Foreign Office for a report on the Wednesday protests at the US Capitol in Washington, DC, "to clarify conclusions with the federal government and the state of Berlin what should be drawn for the security of the Bundestag."

A Bundestag spokeswoman confirmed that Schäuble had written to MPs but had not commented on the contents of the letter.

Tensions remain high in the United States after several hundred people cordoned off the US Congress and made their way inland after a much larger crowd to support US President Donald Trump's allegations of vote rigging in the November 3 presidential election.

US Capitol Police shot protester Ashley Babbitt, 35, on Wednesday, and she died later in hospital.

Police officer Brian Siknick, 42, died in hospital after being injured during clashes with protesters.

Three more people died in "medical emergencies" during the mostly peaceful day of protests, but Wednesday's events in Washington may not be the main drive to bolster security in the Bundestag.

During a protest against the epidemic restrictions of Covid 19 in late August, several hundreds of a crowd of 38,000 people stormed the building.

Some carried the old Imperial German banner used by the far-right Reichsburg movement.
