The latest medical methods for detecting skin cancer

Researchers from the "Kaunas University" of Technology in Lithuania and the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences have developed a new computer-aided diagnostic system that detects skin cancer in a more accurate way than a clinical examination.

The study was conducted on pictures of 100 patients with different diseases of the skin lesions for evaluation and diagnosis. According to the science site Technology Networks

The latest medical methods for detecting skin cancer

After comparing and analyzing complex data on skin tumors recorded with different techniques, researchers succeeded in developing a new diagnostic system that can differentiate between malignant tumors in the skin and a nevus or benign mole with an accuracy of more than 90%.

In current systems, clinical diagnostic accuracy of melanoma is only 65% because it depends on the experience of the dermatologist performing the examination.

Professor Reynaldas Rizzottis, head of the research team, said: “The novelty of our method combines diagnostic information obtained from various non-invasive imaging techniques, such as: optical spectrophotometry and ultrasound imaging.”

Rizotis added, "An effective diagnosis of a malignant melanoma in its early stages can prevent the patient from reaching a critical condition and save more lives."

The research team is working on making the new system available in small medical institutions and homes for self-diagnosis. The researchers developed a prototype of the new technology, which is carried out clinically after compliance with the protocol requirements for clinical research confirmed by the regional bioethics committee.
