Hong Kong President Carrie Lam does not have a bank account and keeps her money in her home
Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam said she keeps "piles of cash" in her home; Because she no longer has a bank account since the United States imposed sanctions on her.
And Carrie Lam said in an interview with the local English television station "HK ABC", on Friday evening, that she uses cash every day in all of her transactions.
"I am the chief executive of the Hong Kong region sitting in front of you. I do not have a bank account. I have piles of cash in my house. The government pays me my cash," she added.
And she continued, "I am honored that unjustified sanctions are imposed on me" by the US government.
Carrie Lam earns a wage of 5.21 million domestic dollars (672,000 dollars) a year, which is among the highest for world leaders.
Her statements sparked condemnation as internet pioneers posted on social media pictures of the little money they have in their money boxes compared to Carrie Lam's fortune. Some questioned how to transfer her large wages to her home.
Carrie Lam told the media last August that she was "facing some difficulties" in using credit cards due to the US sanctions.
And imposed US sanctions on Carrie Lam and 14 high-ranking officials in Hong Kong, after Beijing's decision last June, to impose a very strict national security law in this semi-autonomous region.
Under the US sanctions, the assets of the 15 officials in the United States have been frozen, with the criminalization of any financial transaction they undertake inside this country.
