Attractive heroes headed by the African American Teres Johnson, since most American films now practice "political correction" and fight against Hollywood racism by giving more space to African Americans and the rest of the marginalized races. In addition to all this, the name of the star is John Malkovich, who performs one of his usual roles as a cunning man with a balanced amount of evil and good.

“The Rebel Hostage” is a direct continuation or imitation of the Die hard series that made Bruce Willis a stardom and formed a new art genre in American cinema, the plot of which is summed up in one man standing up to a fierce gang inside an enclosed space. On the other hand, "The Rebel Hostage" is inspired by some of its features from the famous Spanish series La Casa De Papel, which has another name in English, Money Heist, and deals with the relationships that develop between a number of thieves and hostages, and the stories of betrayals and mutual heroism.

The Rebel Hostage also plays on some contemporary issues such as saving children from abuse or poor conditions, and multi-ethnic marriage, but all this powerful concoction that on paper seems guaranteed to succeed, comes with a very modest result. Perhaps the biggest reason for this result is the low level of director John Keys, who does not know how to execute battle scenes or suspense or manage his actors in a way that extracts their potential, in addition to the confusion of the film’s script, especially in its last third, which is supposed to be the strongest and fastest chapters of this type of films the movement.

"Rebel Hostage" begins with the story of former soldier Kyle Snowdon (is the name a tribute to the top leaker Edward Snowden?) who, during a war battle in Afghanistan, accidentally kills one of his colleagues, psychologically suffering from this accident, as he suffers from nightmares and heavy drinking and cigarettes, but Snowden is a good man, raising his only daughter alone, after the departure of his wife, who may not have tolerated his temper after his return from the war. Snowden is not only a protective father, of the kind that has spread in world cinema over the past years, but he also works in an agency to rescue suffering children, and indeed succeeds in saving an orphaned Spanish child who does not speak English, who is mistreated by the man who raises him (once Again, the film emphasizes multi-ethnicity and the importance of national unity), and Snowdon has another problem. His late mother married a white man, well-known Congressman Sam Savty (Malkovich), a popular politician, but those close to him, like Kyle, know he is a corrupt criminal.

Kyle isn't the only one who knows Sam's secrets. Another man named Egan Rice (Christopher Backus) plots revenge on Sam by raiding a new store that Sam is supposed to open, where he and his men detain store employees and customers, and force Sam to confess to some of his crimes. But Kyle, unlike Reyes, hates violence or breaking the rules, and he's trying to save the lives of the hostages, perhaps atone for his guilt!

The movie is full of more characters and sub-lines, which makes it more like a shortened series, where all the characters seem to be able to grow and develop, but only 89 minutes, which is the time of the film, it cannot do all these characters and side plots their right, and thus appear as incomplete truncated threads .

Although this artistic genre depends on the excitement and the impressive execution of action scenes, these scenes seem very weak, as if they were executed by some amateur students. Even attempts to use the nature of the place, the supermarket owned by Sam, is frail and devoid of creativity and imagination. Eventually the viewer may find himself turned into a hostage who wants to rebel and get out of the movie theater.
