Haitian President Jovenel Moise assassinated in his residence The interim Prime Minister of Haiti, Claude Joseph, confirmed, on Wednesday, media reports that spoke of the assassination of the country's President, Jovenel Moise, at his residence.

And media reports said that Moyes was killed after an assassination in his private residence.

Joseph said in a statement that unknown assailants attacked President Moise's residence during the night, and shot him dead, according to what was reported by "Reuters".

The statement added: "At around one o'clock in the morning from Tuesday-Wednesday night, a group of unknown persons, including some who speak Spanish, attacked the residence of the President of Haiti, causing him fatal injury."

He continued, "Necessary measures are being taken. Prime Minister Dr. Claude Joseph calls on the population to calm down. The state's security situation is under control."

This assassination comes amid severe crises in the country at the political, economic and security levels.

Haiti is located in the Caribbean Sea, and is one of the poorest countries on the American continent.

The slain president had postponed the constitutional referendum, which was to be carried out in late June, indefinitely due to the repercussions of the Corona crisis.

But the referendum was met with strong opposition by Moyes' opponents, and this may have been the real reason for the delay, especially as the country witnessed mass protests against his rule.

The opposition and civil society organizations were challenging the legitimacy of President Moise, who rules the country in January 2020 by presidential decrees, despite the absence of Parliament as a result of the postponement of the elections.

While the murdered president was saying that his presidential term ends in February 2022, the opposition asserts that his term originally ended in February 2021.

This is due to Moyes for the first time in 2017, before the result of this election was annulled due to fraud, so he was re-elected again a year later, in 2018.

In February, Moise's government announced that it had foiled an attempt to kill him and overthrow the government.

In terms of the security crisis, the Haitian authorities declared an emergency in some districts of the capital and in another area to re-establish the authority of the state in areas out of its control and now in the hands of gangs.

According to a census conducted by United Nations agencies, more than ten thousand people from poor neighborhoods in the capital were forced to leave their homes due to violence or fires, according to "AFP".

The country lives under the weight of armed gangs that control areas in the country.
