The painting was gifted by Churchill to a friend of the famous Greek shipbuilder, Aristotle Onassis.

This oil painting, drawn by Churchill in 1921, bears the title “The Death, Pericles.” Phillips estimated its price at between one and a half million dollars and two million, much less than another painting of “The Old Lion” sold by American Hollywood star Angelina Jolie for 11.6 million. A dollar at a Christie's auction last March.

Philips Vice President Jean-Paul Anglen said before the auction that Churchill (1874-1965) kept the painting for 40 years before presenting it in 1961, four years before his death, to his friend, businessman Aristotle Onassis.

And the wealthy Greek was so proud of this gift that he hung it in the place of honor, in his yacht, alongside works by Vermeer, Gauguin, Le Greco and Pissarro.

This "super yacht", which Onassis named "Christina" after his daughter, was a former Canadian Navy frigate, about 100 meters long, that participated in the landings carried out by the Allied forces on the Normandy beach in France during World War II, and Onassis bought it after The war for 34 thousand dollars.

Onassis spent about four million dollars renovating the frigate, making it "one of the most amazing floating structures", and one of the favorite sites of the rich and famous community of that era, according to Angeline.

Among the most prominent who hosted the famous yacht on board were US President John F. Kennedy, Prince of Monaco Rainier III, actors Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly and opera singer Maria Callas.

After Onassis died in 1975, seven years after his marriage to Jackie Kennedy, his yacht was sold, and all its contents were stored in storage until his heirs finally decided to give up the painting.
